The Brazilian Mission to the United Nations has played an active role at this world body since 1945, when it was one of the founding members. The permanent mission is represented by the Minister of External Relations, Ambassador Antonio de Aquiar Patriota, and the permanent representative Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti.

Brazil is a part of what is known as the G4 countries which include Brazil, Germany, Japan and India. On September 23, 2011 the G4 countries released a press statement in the margins of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly, in which it was announced that those nations would exchange views on the reform of the Security Council.

The G4 nations believe that the Security Council should be enlarged to prepare for the 21st century. Both permanent and non-permanent types of membership should be expanded, in order to reflect in a more realistic way the realities of present day geopolitics.
